Polar Problem
Hi everyone! In my previous two posts we talked about recycling paper, and whether or not it was always a good idea. In the end we reached the decision that eco-friendly paper (click for more info) was good for the environment and could be used just the way normal paper is. But that's only a small part of global warming, and perhaps even not even the most important.
Have you ever had those li'l guys standing out in your front garden in December, acting as the best possible Christmas decoration? I actually haven't but have had a little snowman on skis, but then again that's not
really my point. In fact what I'm saying has nothing to do with Christmas whatsoever (even though it's the best time of the year, and I promise to do a Christmas issue of "Precious Planet" in December). What I'm really saying is that in a few years time, you'll be putting up fake decorations because guess what? Polar bears are getting extinct. We have used polar bears as a part of a Christmas mascot, a tradition, and half the polar bear photos on Google are Christmas-themed (the other half are mainly ones where they are dying). Did the polar bears fuss when you uploaded photos of them on the internet? No, they didn't. Did they start a massive protest when you made Christmas decorations that looked nothing like them and made them feel like they were being mocked? No, they did not. But now they are in real danger, and yes they are crying, yes they are fussing, so why aren't we doing anything? Are people really that selfish?
Some of you people who know a lot about science (or just think polar bears are adorable) might know all the whens, whys and hows. So you can skip this paragraph. But for those of you who don't know when, why and how polar bears are getting extinct- read this next bit.
When? By the year 2040, polar bears are likely to experience reproductive failure, and it is estimated by the Earth Website that they won’t be around at all by 2100.
Why? Polar bears live in Antarctica, where everything is snow and ice. Because of climate change, the sun is heating up and the ice where they live is melting.
How? Polar bears are very vulnerable, and their numbers are quickly decreasing.
So... we now know what the polar problem is, but how can we help? You could start a protest, but that's slightly wild, and may not even help. Here's a calmer idea that I know will definitely work- donate money to charities that help save polar bears. Here are some examples:
Polar Bears International Charity
Click on the charity links above to find out how to donate!
Let's go save the polar bears! I've got to go now, because I'm going to organise some events to raise money for these charities!
